When you see a finished Smile Box, it’s easy to think it all came together quite quickly…But our new Neurodiversity Box tells a very different story.
In fact, it’s taken longer to create than any other box we’ve launched. Not because we couldn’t make our minds up, but because we wanted to get it right.
How It Started
Over the last few years, we’ve seen more and more organisations wanting to do better when it comes to neurodiversity. They want to create inclusive workplaces, want to support their people and want to start meaningful conversations. But many are left asking the same question: Where do we start?
That’s where the idea for our Neurodiversity Box began. We didn’t want to create another wellbeing gift that would be opened, enjoyed and forgotten. We wanted to create something with purpose. Something that encouraged learning as much as it encouraged self-care.
Designing with Purpose
If you walked into Smile Box HQ during this project, you’d have found products absolutely everywhere!
Our desks became covered with samples. We tested different wellbeing products, compared suppliers, debated colours, changed designs and completely reworked ideas we’d originally loved.
Some products looked brilliant but didn’t really add value. Others worked well but didn’t quite fit the message we were trying to create.
Every decision came back to one question: Does this genuinely help someone feel supported, understood or included?
If the answer wasn’t a clear yes, it didn’t make the final box.
Education Was A Non-Negotiable
One thing we were determined to include was an educational element.
We know that creating an inclusive workplace isn’t just about giving someone a gift. It’s about building understanding across teams. That meant our neurodiversity information leaflet went through several versions before we were happy with it.
We wanted it to be informative without being overwhelming, practical without being patronising, and something people would actually take the time to read.
Because awareness is where meaningful conversations begin.
A Project Close To Home
This launch has also been a personal one.
Our founder, Donna, lives with ADHD, along with her son has Autism and ADHD.
While no two people’s experiences are the same, those lived experiences brought an extra layer of care to the project. They were a constant reminder that inclusion isn’t about making assumptions-it’s about creating workplaces where people feel comfortable being themselves and asking for the support they need.
That belief has shaped Smile Box from the very beginning, and it naturally became part of this product too.
Reflecting On The Journey
Launching this box has reminded us why we love what we do.
It challenged us to think differently, pushed us to keep refining our ideas and reinforced something we’ve always believed at Smile Box:
The best products are created by listening, learning and never settling for “good enough.”
We’re incredibly proud of what we’ve created, but even more excited about what comes next. We hope this box helps organisations start conversations, increase understanding and continue building workplaces where everyone can thrive.
